The First Draft Krewe, led by the inimitable Athenae and Scout Prime, along with bloggers Sinfonian (and if you haven’t had your heart broken yet today read his posts “Emotions” and “1773 Sere Street”), Spork Incident, Mike Danablog, and many other fine folks, have completed their house gutting trip to New Orleans.
For the foreseeable future, this is what it’s going to take: committed individuals who have decided that they are going to drag New Orleans back from the brink, inch by inch, with no guarantee of success because the people with resources to guarantee success sure as hell ain’t going to do it. As Athenae says in her post,
And this, though, isn't two days after the storm but two years. There's no one; people are on their own.
Once you been there, once you’ve seen New Orleans for yourself, you can begin to understand the nightmarish magnitude of this tragedy, of what America is allowing to fester within herself. This is what I saw when I was there. A two-inch square flash video player window is totally inadequate to the task of conveying the horror, the sense of pointless waste you experience when you’re in the lower 9th ward. But it is the only testimony I can offer.
