Lost in all the hullaballoo over birth control funding in the stimulus package - and really, the fact that the GOP can still make noise over condoms while the economy staggers like Toshiro Mifune at the end of The Seven Samurai makes me want to eat my own brain - has been Barack Obama's quiet warning to the Pentagon that we are, in fact, broke:
In his first appearance before the Senate Armed Services Committee as a member of President Barack Obama's cabinet, Defense Secretary Robert Gates today issued more words of warning to the defense industry and Pentagon bureaucracy.
"One thing we have known for many months is that the spigot of defense funding opened by 9/11 is closing," he said. "With two major campaigns ongoing, the economic crisis and resulting budget pressures will force hard choices on this department."
I swear, I never thought I'd see the day when I would applaud someone for pointing out the bloody obvious fact that "wars cost money." But then again, we are talking about an American president here and frankly they haven't been giving anyone much reason to applaud lately. Still, based on this and his near-immediate orders to close Gitmo and stop fucking imprisoning and torturing people who have no access to counsel, so far, this Obama guy is OK in my book.
