A number of commenters there said the illustrations reminded them of Gahan Wilson; the illustration above reminded me of Tove Jansson. For those of you unfamiliar with her work, she wrote and illustrated a series of children's books featuring the Moomin characters, who are largely unknown here in the States but are hugely popular in Europe and Japan. She also wrote and illustrated a comic strip aimed at adults featuring the same characters, which Drawn & Quarterly is collecting into beautiful hardcover editions:
